‘The Question Is When We Blow Up the Whole Country’ — Two Days Before He Shares a Building With Iran’s President

Trump said it by phone to Fox News on September 20: with Iran, “the question is when we blow up the whole country. They’d better behave.”

He described himself as being in the deciding stage — “something very big will happen in the near future” — and laid out the menu as he sees it: strangle Iran economically, reach a deal, or the option he led with.

The answers came within hours. Iran’s central military headquarters declared that the US has “decided to resume action against Iran” and warned regional states against cooperating. The IRGC went further: if the US strikes, every American base in the Middle East becomes a retaliation target, with the scope extending to US naval assets in the Indian Ocean. The State Department issued a new security alert for Americans in the region — “unpredictable escalation is possible.”

The Signal Under the Noise

The threat got the headlines. The more consequential item was quieter.

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, told Al Jazeera that Tehran has transmitted conditions for restarting negotiations — through mediators, to the United States. The conditions: an end to the war on all fronts, the release of frozen Iranian assets, and the lifting of the naval blockade. The framing suggests reviving the ceasefire MOU the two sides reached in June before it collapsed.

This matters because of what this site flagged as the confirmation channel. When Trump pegged the war’s end to the election, the test we set was: a real endgame would leak through Gulf mediators resurfacing and Iranian tone shifting. Rezaei’s interview is exactly that leak — the first concrete, attributable diplomatic offer from Tehran’s side in the entire war.

Both paths of the September 10 binary are now visibly live at once. The escalation path: “blow up the whole country,” the IRGC’s all-bases retaliation doctrine, a State Department alert — consistent with the warning that a promised end-date Trump cannot deliver diplomatically raises the odds he attempts to deliver it militarily. The deal path: actual conditions, transmitted through actual mediators, aimed at reviving an actual signed document. And the collision point is scheduled: the conditions Iran named require lifting the naval blockade — surrendering the Hormuz-as-US-territory claim and the toll-collection model built on top of it. Trump’s cheapest concession in February is now his most expensive, because he spent six months converting the blockade into territory, revenue, and doctrine.

The Building They’ll Share

The 81st UN General Assembly opens September 22 in New York. Trump attends. So does Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Trump has left open the possibility of meeting him — which would be the first encounter between US and Iranian presidents since 1979. Iran, which has run every contact of this war through intermediaries, is reportedly cautious about direct talks. But the geometry is unprecedented for this conflict: both principals, one building, one week — with a mediated offer already on the table and a “very big” something promised for the near future.

The UNGA week now stacks four of this site’s live threads in one city: Trump-Pezeshkian proximity, the Trump-Zelensky energy-truce meeting, Japan’s Takaichi intercepting Trump before Xi lands on the 23rd, and AI governance on the agenda with the AI Force freshly announced.

For oil, this is the sharpest binary week of the war. The escalation tail is fatter than the market’s routine: an IRGC doctrine naming every regional US base plus Indian Ocean naval assets describes a theater-wide war, not another exchange of strikes — and Trump’s “very big” phrasing before UNGA reads as deadline pressure applied with a live weapon. The de-escalation tail is equally real for the first time: Iran’s three conditions are concrete and largely economic, which makes them negotiable, and any confirmed Trump-Pezeshkian contact — even a handshake — would be the strongest deal signal since February and immediately bearish crude. Positioning for one tail is a coin flip; the disciplined read is that implied vol on energy through the UNGA week is the instrument that is actually mispriced if markets treat this as another rhetorical Thursday. The tell that decides direction: whether the blockade appears in any US response to the mediated conditions. The blockade is the one item Trump has made too expensive for himself to trade — unless the election calendar makes it cheap again.
