On October 8, at a “Science: A New Golden Age” summit in Washington, Trump handed out the country’s top honors for science and technology.
National Medal of Science
- Elon Musk — Tesla, SpaceX, xAI
- Jensen Huang — Nvidia
- Sergey Brin — Google co-founder
- Lisa Su — AMD
National Medal of Technology and Innovation
- Satya Nadella — Microsoft
- Michael Dell — Dell Technologies
Americans live in an era of wonder and technological achievement, Trump said, and with the help of the people in the room the country will always stay on top. Nobody, he said, can compete with the US.
The event was held at the Washington building now named the Donald J. Trump Institute of Peace.
The Musk Reconciliation
Trump introduced each honoree. Musk’s introduction ran longest. Trump called him a “national treasure” and a modern-day Thomas Edison, and referred to him as his friend.
The two were close during the 2024 campaign, when Musk spent heavily to help Trump win. They broke publicly in June 2025 over Trump’s tax-cut bill. The medal makes the repair official.
Who Got Medals, and Who Got Warnings
The list is the story. Four of the six run or founded companies at the center of the AI build-out: Nvidia and AMD make the chips, Google and Microsoft run the models and clouds, and Musk runs xAI. Dell sells the servers that fill AI data centers.
Musk and Huang were also on the guest list for Xi Jinping’s state dinner two weeks earlier, and all of these businesses sit on the line between the China race Trump talks about and the “super intelligence” cooperation he put on the summit agenda.
Compare September 14. After safety researchers at Anthropic and Google resigned with public warnings, Trump called the AI-safety movement a “disgusting conspiracy,” told “traitors” to be careful, and named Anthropic’s CEO while citing his “criminal and regulatory power” over AI companies.
Read together, the two events set out the administration’s terms for the AI industry. Build fast, compete with China, stand next to the president, and the reward is the nation’s highest honor and a seat at the state dinner. Argue for slowing down, and the response is “traitors” and a reminder of prosecutorial power. Neither the medals nor the threats are policy in themselves. But they shape what executives say in public, and that matters in a year when the White House is setting chip export rules, AI regulation, and a new “AI Force”. A company deciding whether to back a safety rule or criticize an export decision now knows which side of that line comes with a medal.
A Different Kind of Honoree
The National Medal of Science has traditionally gone to research scientists, most often for discoveries recognized through a nomination and review process run with the National Science Foundation. This year’s science list is mostly chief executives. Several have real technical credentials — Su holds a doctorate in electrical engineering, Brin co-created Google’s search algorithm, and Huang is an engineer by training — but the honors read as recognition of industrial leadership as much as of scientific discovery.
The Other Side
These are among the most consequential technologists of the era. Nvidia’s chips, AMD’s processors, and Google’s and Microsoft’s platforms underpin the AI economy, and SpaceX has transformed space launch. Honoring the people who built them is defensible on the merits, and presidents have long used medals to celebrate industry leaders. The Musk reconciliation also lowers a source of political noise around Tesla and SpaceX’s government work.
For markets, the ceremony is a sentiment signal for AI and semiconductor names: the White House is publicly aligned with Nvidia, AMD, Google, Microsoft, Dell, and Musk’s companies, which lowers perceived regulatory risk for them in the near term. The Musk repair specifically reduces headline risk around SpaceX contracts and Tesla. The other side of the same signal is that AI policy is personal and loyalty-weighted, so favor can shift with a public disagreement — as the June 2025 split showed. Watch the next chip export decision on China and any federal AI rule. Those will show whether the medals came with policy, or only with photographs.
