Auto / Manufacturing ↑$21 Billion in Trump’s Post, $10 Billion in Tokyo’s: Japan’s New York Chip Fabs Lead a Pre-Midterm Run of Asian Investment Claims
On October 14 Trump announced that GlobalFoundries and the Commerce Department had unveiled a $21 billion investment to build two new chip plants in Malta, New York, creating 27,000 construction and supply-chain jobs and more than 1,000 manufacturing jobs. It is the third project under Japan’s $550 billion US investment pledge, after synthetic diamonds and small modular reactors. Japan’s foreign ministry confirmed the deal but gave a smaller number: about $10 billion, with construction starting this year, possibly rising to $21 billion if capacity is added later. Japanese media say the plants will make logic chips for telecom and cars, supplying Japanese automakers’ US factories. In the same posts, Trump said Korea’s $50 billion investment in Alaska LNG is part of its trade deal, and that Taiwan has committed to buy $70 to $80 billion of Alaska gas — 30% of the pipeline’s supply for 20 years — and to invest $4.4 billion in equity.

Auto / Manufacturing ↑A $15 Billion Steel Mill for Iowa, Announced Five Weeks Before Iowa Votes — and Tied to the $5,000 ‘Trump Dividend’
On September 28 Trump announced that Mesabi Metallics will build ‘the largest steel mill in American history’ in Iowa: a $15 billion plant that would turn Minnesota iron ore into 7.5 million tons of steel a year at first and 10 million at full capacity. The White House projects 1,750 permanent jobs, up to 6,000 construction jobs, and $95 billion added to the economy over ten years. Trump credited his 50% steel tariffs — ‘everyone is building here because they don’t want to pay tariffs’ — and said tariff revenue is one reason Republicans can pay every adult $5,000 if they win both chambers. Iowa has a Senate seat and three House districts in play in November. Mesabi, a unit of India’s Essar Group, is the successor to a Minnesota project that stalled for years and went through bankruptcy.

Auto / Manufacturing ↓Two Days After Calling It a ‘Baseless Rumor,’ Trump Says Chinese Car Plants in America Are Fine — Ten Days Before Xi Arrives
On September 9, Rep. Elissa Slotkin warned that Trump was rumored to be preparing to open the US car market to China as part of a trade negotiation, and Trump called it ‘totally baseless.’ On September 11, on Fox News, he said it himself: ‘If China wants to come to America and open factories to make cars, I’m fine with it. Japan did that. The most important thing is they hire our people.’ The statement lands roughly ten days before a Xi summit in Washington, against the unified opposition of US automakers, whose trade group is pushing Congress for a permanent ban. The only red line he kept: no Chinese plants in Mexico shipping cars north.

Auto / Manufacturing ↓Trump Announces 50% Tariffs on Canadian Autos, Trucks, Parts, and Steel — Effective January 2027
Trump posted on Truth Social on August 24 that all Canadian autos, trucks, auto parts, and steel will face 50% tariffs starting January 1, 2027. The exemption: ‘Make it in the USA — zero tariff.’ He added that Canada ‘will no longer be treated like a state’ and declared ‘we don’t need Canada, but Canada needs us.’ The auto announcement is a separate and larger escalation than the August 22 tariffs on wine, furniture, and dairy — Canada and the US share one of the most integrated auto supply chains in the world.

Auto / Manufacturing ↑Trump Brings Musk, Cook, and Fink to Beijing. The CEOs Are the Message.
Trump invited the heads of Tesla, Apple, and BlackRock to join his Xi summit trip — a deliberate signal that this is a deal-making mission, not a diplomatic formality. For US tech and finance, the stakes are direct: AI export controls, rare earth access, and $400B+ in China-exposed revenue hang on the outcome.

Auto / Manufacturing →CPI Came in at 0.6%. That’s the Good News. The Bad News Is What’s Still Coming.
May CPI matched forecasts at 0.6% monthly — down from 0.9% the prior month. The deceleration looks like relief. It isn’t. Tariff pass-through is still incomplete. The Hormuz oil premium is still in prices. And the Fed has no political room to cut while Trump is the one causing the inflation.

Auto / Manufacturing ↑Axios: US and Iran Are Close to a 14-Point MOU. Here’s What’s Actually in It.
Axios reports the White House is negotiating a one-page, 14-point memorandum of understanding with Iran — the most advanced agreement framework since the war began. Iran pauses uranium enrichment; the US lifts some sanctions and unfreezes billions in Iranian assets; Hormuz restrictions are phased out. Nothing is signed. Everything is contingent.

Auto / Manufacturing ↓Trump’s China Trip Is Happening — Wartime. The Iran War Just Became a US-China Negotiation.
Trump’s Beijing visit — delayed six weeks by the Iran War — is now confirmed as a wartime trip. The security advance team landed. The US simultaneously sanctioned five Chinese refineries for buying Iranian oil. China issued its first executive order telling companies to ignore ‘unjust US sanctions.’ The summit hasn’t started and the pre-fight has already begun.

OPEC+ voted to increase June output by 188,000 barrels per day — the first meeting since UAE’s departure, with Saudi Arabia and Russia leading a coalition that now includes Iraq, Kuwait, Oman, Kazakhstan, and Algeria. With Brent at $126, the move is as much political as economic.

Auto / Manufacturing ↓Trump Cuts 5,000 Troops from Germany and Raises EU Auto Tariffs — The Iran War Bill Comes Due
The US announced a 14% reduction in Germany-based troops and tariff hikes on EU cars and trucks. Both moves are direct economic and security consequences for Europe’s refusal to participate in the Iran War. Germany has 6–12 months before the cuts complete.

Jerome Powell announced at his final FOMC press conference that he will remain as a Fed governor after his chair term ends May 15 — breaking a precedent unbroken since 1948. He cited ‘legal attacks’ threatening Fed independence and said the institution must ‘rely on the courts’ to fight back.

Auto / Manufacturing ↓Brent Hits $126 as US Military Options Return to the Table
Brent crude surged to $126/barrel intraday — a 4-year high — on reports that the US military is reviewing new strike options against Iran. A ‘short and powerful’ airstrike plan is reportedly being prepared as Trump looks to break the negotiating deadlock or deliver a final blow before any ceasefire.
